    BB-Daman Bakugaiden

    BB-Daman Bakugaiden

If you have seen some pictures of BB-Daman Bakugaiden, you might recognise that the characters look like Bomberman! They are actually a different kind of Bomberman! The differences between them are that Bomberman uses bombs as weapons and have the belt buckle. That has been replaced by a marble for the B-Damans, in which they can fire out concentrated energy which turns into rays of light that can be destructive or have healing properties. In order for B-Damans [the marble-shooting people] to fire out light rays, they have to have good practice with aiming and shooting out energy. The harder they practice, the stronger the light ray. Also, B-Damans have to concentrate their energy and be in good physical condition.

    How did BB-Daman Bakugaiden start?

The BB-Daman Bakugaiden idea were originally toys called B-Daman. B-Daman was born in 1993. It was invited by Hudson Soft and Takara. B-Daman doesn't throw bombs, but it shoots b-da (marble) from his body. That's why B-Daman doesn't have a belt. Each B-Daman toy held a single marble that could be fired out by releasing a lever from the back of the figure. Then in 1995, Bomberman B-Daman(as known as BB-Daman) was born into two types. The first type is for those who like playing B-daman, practicing shooting and having skill developing. Another type is for story, i.e. BB-Daman Bakugaiden(or simply Bakugaiden). Hudson Soft decided to make a series of computer games based on these B-Daman marble shooting toys. In the computer games, players try to shoot each other with their marbles in multiplayer, and in single play, the B-Daman player tries to make a group of moving bombs explode together or in sequence by a single marble shot. In some other B-Daman games, there are human characters who battle their B-Daman figure against another human's figure.

The 'evolution' of the B-Daman idea grew to have the B-Damans to wear armour and pilot robots. These B-Daman games were made for the Japanese market and never released in the West, even though Bomberman was.

Hudson with Takara then decided to make an anime based on the B-Daman idea of shooting marbles and riding mecha, which further developed the concepts of B-Daman. The BB-Daman Bakugaiden anime was made in 1998 and became very successful and popular in Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, and other Oriental countries the anime was released in. A sequel series to the anime was made, called BB-Daman Bakugaiden V, which was made in 1999 and followed the same success as with the first series. The V stands for 'Victory', but also the number 5 in roman numerals, because there are five stages in the development of BB-Daman Bakugaiden. The first series of the BB-Daman Bakugaiden anime was the 4th stage [IV], and so BB-Daman Bakugaiden V was the 5th stage.

BB-Daman Bakugaiden IV and BB-Daman Bakugaiden V were the only two stages to be the anime development. Stages 1-3 [I, II, and III] were never made into animes, but they were made into comics. The first three stages were the toy 'evolutionary' stages.

In Bomberman/B-Daman games, you'll have noticed that the characters in multiplay look and act exactly like each other, except for the colour variations which is the only thing distinguishes them.

In the BB-Daman Bakugaiden anime, that is not the case. Each B-Da character has their own personalities, unique identities, distinguishing features even, and of course, their own colours! These are the factors that make the characters so original and what makes them true individuals.
