Benio Hanamura was a very modern girl in her era (1919). She was taught kendo by her father. (Her mother had died a long time ago).
Even Ranmaru, her childhood friend, a pretty boy who dreamt to be a kabuki player, couldn't defeat her.
She was fierce and thought a lot about emancipation. (Benio just fell from her bicycle - it's not common for a girl to ride bicycle that day. Shinobu Ijuin, a 2nd lieutenant, laughed at her, so she slapped his face).
This time Benio played kite with Ranmaru. She ended up climbing a tree and fell when she saw Lieutenant Ijuin came.
She "attacked" Ijuin when he came to visit her father. And her father shouted at her, telling her that IJUIN WAS HER FIANCE!!!
