![]() Mysterious Cities of GoldSet in the 1530’s, against the backdrop of the Spanish conquest of the New World, The Mysterious Cities of Gold follows the adventures of three children as they search for the legendary 7 cities of gold. The main character of the series is Esteban, a boy with possesses an extraordinary ability to call out the sun, and who holds one of the medallion keys to open the cities of gold. Esteban is joined by his two friends - Zia an Inca girl who holds the other key to the cities of gold, and Tao who is the last survivor of the Civilization of Heva, an ultra-advanced civilization which built many technological wonders, and the actual cities of gold themselves. The children are accompanied by a Spanish navigator named Mendoza, and his two bumbling sailors, Sancho and Pedro. The Mysterious Cities of Gold is a story of adventure and discovery, as the characters’ quest for the cities of gold takes them across the Atlantic Ocean, over the rugged Andes Mountains, into the Amazon jungle, and across countless other deserts, mountains, and rivers. Throughout their travels, the children befriend many Indian tribes, and escape many dangers, such as gold-greedy Europeans, hostile native tribes, and the Olmecs. They also discover many ancient ruins, and secrets of the cities of gold, as well as many treasures and mysterious futuristic machines, such as the solar powered sailing ship, The Solaris, and a flying golden condor, which the children use for travel. Many of the figures and events in the series are taken right out of the history books. For instance, General Pizarro, the conqueror of the Incas has a prominent role in the series, and many of the Mayan and Incan ruins that the characters visit, such as Machu Picchu, are actual, real-life ruins. The show also provides a bit of a crash course in Native South American culture and religion. The Mysterious Cities of Gold had never been released on vhs or dvd in English. The only way to view this series, is to purchase a recorded-from-tv version from other fans of the series, or to purchase the released French version.
