Tensai Yanagisawa Kyozu no Seikatsu
Mr. Yanagisawa is a professor of Dept. of Economy in Yokohama University. He always gets up at 5:30, goes to bed at 9:00 p.m., and walks along only the right side of the roads. To get a good and cheep spanish mackerel, he neglects a fish peddler's hooting. This book is bright and merry notes on a person who is faithful to the road-traffic law and believes the ability of free-market-capitalism.
First episode is far from interesting. Setsuko goes to Yokohama University following her father, who walks along only right side and crosses road at only pedestrian crossing. She says to her father, "I don't like to go with you. Shameful!" Going alone, Yanagisawa thinks "She have thought of me so far 19 years... No, I have to go my way." At the moment she embraces him, making a smile... Nothing special, a scene from plain homedrama. But as episodes proceed, they are evolving to interesting ones. The fourth episode 'Agony of an assistant professor' is a story on assistant prof. Sagawa, who gave way to being decoyed by lasses. He cheats Yanagisawa's exam and hands it over to them. But his answers were gotten to zero points by Yanagisawa because he was not faithful to the basics of economy, so he was kicked off by them. Being shocked, he decided to study economy from basics in the Yanagisawa's class. Though his disguise was so unskillful that he was not able to hide himself, Yanagisawa never minded it. "The happening was not told even at his dinner table."
The interest of this manga is not slap-stick style. Yamashita emphasizes description of chracters and situations, of which realm she is deserved to be called Meister in spite of many competitors. Drawings are simple, but contain all that there have to be and show very delicately considered mise-en-scène. In vol.14, his stepbrother plays with various dolls. The scene was maybe made by set premise. The most delicate picture was seen at 'Ron', which I could find a mistake(Please see the scene Ryu is tested for Kitaichi's bodyguard. Kosuzu's face is reflected on his sword, but the direction of sword must be flipped horizontally, considering Kosuzu's position ^^), but not in this manga. It's interesting that the characters become more and more natural as volumes proceed because Yamashita is perhaps accustomed to drawing characters.
