    To Heart

    To Heart

To Heart is a Japanese TV series which started its run on April 1st, 1999. It is based on a hentai (adult) dating simulation game for the PC, although the TV series is most definitely NOT hentai. The series contains 13 half-hour episodes which focus on the life of high school students Fujita Hiroyuki and Kamigishi Akari. Akari and Hiroyuki have been friends since kindergarten, when Hiroyuki gave his schoolbooks to a little pig-tailed Akari after she dropped hers in the rain.

I would say there are four main characters: Akari, Hiroyuki, Nagaoka Shiho, and Satou Masashi. These four are pretty much in every episode, even if the story isn't focusing on them. There are six other girls who are major characters, and a few minor characters. Each of the nine girls has a distinctly different personality, but they have one thing in common: all but one are in love with Hiroyuki. ^^ He may grumble constantly about being tired and hungry, but when it comes down to it he's a very sweet guy who's always willing to lend a hand to anybody who needs it.

This is not a series for people who need explosions, rough language, or nudity to keep them entertained. It is just a quiet glimpse at the life of a group of Japanese high school students - you can learn a lot about the Japanese school system from this show. Even the things which might be considered out of the ordinary (a girl with psychic powers, an android trying to fit in at school) are taken in stride and not presented as abnormal. This quickly became my favorite anime - how could you not love a show that makes you feel good every single time you watch it? I highly recommend this series.

By the way... there is also a Japanese TV drama series (live action) called To Heart. I don't know anything about it, but I see related merchandise on eBay from time to time.
